Dennis Pitta is BACK!

Not too long ago, I wrote an article expressing my desire for the Baltimore Ravens to cut Dennis Pitta. There is a reason why I’m not in the front office.

The Ravens defeated the Cleveland Browns in a come from behind victory, and Pitta’s performance stood out on the day. While Mike Wallace took much of the glory with two receiving touchdowns, Pitta led the team in receptions (9) and receiving yards (102).

During the pathetic first quarter when the Browns took a quick 20-2 lead, Pitta only caught one ball for six yards; it was his only target of the quarter. The Baltimore Ravens featured Pitta heavily in the second quarter as they made it a one score game. He was targeted seven times with five receptions for 55 yards including a big 30-yard reception on third down to set up one of Wallace’s touchdowns.

“He’s a play maker. Having a tight end that can be a third down play maker is really important and valuable. You can’t coach that,” said Head Coach John Harbaugh during his postgame press conference.

Flacco also commented on Pitta during the press conference. “He looked like himself. I think he’s going to get more and more comfortable as the year goes on. We just have to keep him healthy.”

While I meant no ill will towards the veteran tight end in my article. Using a valuable roster spot on an often injured player who spent most of training camp injured (again) seemed insane. Week one barely swayed my opinion as Pitta only managed three catches for 30 yards.

In week two, Pitta proved the amount of ability he still possesses as he provided quarterback Joe Flacco with an effective outlet and turned two plays into 30 yard gains. It’s great to see one of the heroes of the 2012 super bowl run back on the field.
