Blake Bortles Vs. Ravens Defense: That’s the Real Match Up Here

Blake Bortles is the textbook definition of a gunslinger. He’s a big quarterback with a rocket arm; and he believes he can make any throw. Often his aggressive go for it all mentality works. Last year he was one of the most prolific passers in football with 4,428 passing yards. The flip side to being a gunslinger is the inevitable  interceptions. In 2014 Bortles had 17 interceptions. In 2015 he ended up with 18. This season, Bortles has been picked off three times already. The Ravens have to exploit Bortles’s inability to take care of the football.

The Ravens secondary faces a big challenge in this game. Allen Robinson is one of the best play-makers in the game. Allen Hurns is pretty good too. Bortles has had back to back games over 300 yards. If the Ravens think they can leave their corners alone on islands they may pay for it. It will be up to Dean Pees to mix up coverage schemes and to use Lardarius Webb and Eric Weddle to prevent deep passes.

The Ravens will have to get pressure on Bortles. If they can force him into a bad decision or two it may just be the difference in the game. It looks like Elvis Dumervil could make his first start of the season. If this is the case look for the Ravens pass rush to be boosted a bit.

The Ravens defense has to play well in this one. The offense has shown flashes, but has been disappointing. If the kinks are not out in the Marc Trestman led offensive attack, Pees and his crew have to pick up the slack.

The Ravens defense should feel confident. The past two games have been wins, largely because the defense has played seven dominant quarters. The mission is simple. The Ravens have to force Bortles to beat himself.
