Will Davis will get the start for the Ravens at cornerback as back spasms sideline Shareece Wright:

Jeff Zerbiec  of the Baltimore Sun first reported that Shareece Wright was inactive for the game against the Redskins. While it seemed like it was a benching after Wright’s tough game against the Raiders, Zerbiec’s Baltimore Sun colleague reported that back spasms were the reason for the Wright being active.

It is a little odd that Wright wasn’t on the injury report and yet an injury is keeping him off of the field. One way or another this is big news coming right before the kickoff. The Ravens will get a look at Will Davis at the cornerback position. If he performs well, Wright may not get his job back. After giving up some big plays against Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders, Wright’s stock wasn’t exactly soaring.

I think benching Wright would have been a slight overreaction to one week of football. Wright has been playing decent football. It’s easy to point to last week and cry foul. Remember however that the Ravens gave Oakland short fields and Derek Carr and the Raiders are the most proficient red zone offense in the NFL. It’s not an excuse, but it’s something that gives perspective.

At the end of the day Wright can be a liability. On an island in man coverage he will often provide tight coverage, but the receiver catches the ball too much of the time. Davis may prove to be an upgrade. We will see.

So back spasms are ultimately the reason for the Wright’s absence from this game. The Ravens secondary will be the most crucial aspect of the Ravens defensive attack. The Washington Redskins have the 5th best passing attack in the NFL.
