Rock Bottom Before Super Bowl Glory

The Ravens Super Bowl season was amazing. However it was amazing mostly because nobody saw it coming. The Ravens looked the part to start the season. The Ravens went 9-2 and looked like a sure thing to be a contender. Then things went down hill faster than your boss’s bad mood on a bad work day. The Ravens lost to the Steelers 23-20. The Ravens lost to the Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos. They fired Cam Cameron as their offensive coordinator. At that point few would have believed that this was the Ravens team that was going to win it all.

The Ravens whooped the New York Giants 33-14 in a week 16 offensive explosion. Week 17 against the Bengals was a loss that featured many backups, as the Ravens had nothing to play for. Joe Flacco and the Ravens got red hot. Flacco had one of the truly majestic runs in NFL history. He threw for 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions on his way to becoming Super Bowl MVP.

It took a double overtime win over the Broncos and redemption over the Patriots in the AFC Championship; but the Ravens found a way. It was Ray Lewis’s last ride. The greatest linebacker in history finished his career with a goal line stand that all but sealed his second Super Bowl victory. John Harbaugh found the secret to glory after the Ravens looked like a crumbling team.

The Ravens situation looks bad. I don’t want to sugarcoat a loss to the 1-5 Jets. You can dress it up all you want, the Ravens four game losing streak is ugly as all get out. It just helps to know that John Harbaugh has turned teams around before. It doesn’t mean he will turn this team around. However knowing that he can keep a sinking ship afloat is big for the Ravens.
