4th Round, 122nd Overall Pick – John Johnson, S, Boston College

The secondary has been heavily invested in over the past few free agency periods but the Ravens now need to get younger and deeper in that position, especially as two of the additions are over 30 – Eric Weddle and Brandon Carr. John Johnson is one of my favorite late round safeties who will be pushed down the draft thanks to the depth in this year’s class.

The former cornerback was a four-year contributor for the Boston College Eagles at both cornerback and safety. His cover skills are evident. He has the athleticism and skills to play as a single high safety or match up in man-to-man coverage in the NFL.

Johnson also has very good ball skills and very good hands. He can go and get the ball rather than waiting for it. His instincts are amazing but they are good enough to get the job done and he can read the quarterback fairly well.

Bottom Line: This is a pick for the future of the Baltimore Ravens

He’s not a force against the run but he is again adequate. He can track the ball-carrier pretty well and is a pretty safe tackler if nothing else. Johnson isn’t very physical and won’t blow up the running back or a blocker but he can just about get the job done.

He also stood out on special teams at BC and he’ll be immediate help there for the Ravens.

He’d be great for the Ravens as they could sit him behind Weddle and Jefferson at safety as he develops as a run defender and as a high safety and he can also play some cornerback in sub packages. As a fourth round pick he’d represent good value.
