The Baltimore Ravens have inked a deal to bring back a long-time fan favorite, Lardarius Webb.

Lardarius Webb was cut last month, as part of the Ravens free agency maneuvers. There was always the thought that Webb could come back lingering, so it isn’t surprising that the Ravens brought him back. Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun reported that Webb’s return is on a three year deal.

The contract here isn’t that important here. There isn’t even a guarantee that Webb will be on the 53 man roster. The Ravens have moved on from Webb at the safety position, at least as a starter. They haven’t moved on from the idea that he can contribute to the team. In the NFL, depth is everything and at worst Webb is a good back up at free safety. Cutting him was about cap space. Bringing him back is about getting a veteran defensive back on the roster.

If he makes it, Webb will likely be the Ravens dime back moving forward. In sub packages when the Ravens need five cornerbacks on the field, he could be in the mix. The fans should be happy about this deal. It is a chance for one of the Ravens long-time players to end his career with the purple and black.

I know one thing, Ravens fans are going to be rooting for Webb to be successful. The Ravens drafted Webb in 2009. If he makes the team, which is still not a given, it will be his ninth straight season in the Charm City.
