Free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz could be a possible fit for the Baltimore Ravens

A lot of talk and rumors have been about bringing back Anquan Boldin, but another veteran receiver could be in the mix. New York Giants beat reporter Art Stapleton reported yesterday that there is mutual interest between free agent Victor Cruz and the Ravens. Cruz is expected to make a visit to Baltimore some time in the near future. After failing to select a receiver in the draft, this is not surprising from Ozzie Newsome.

Cruz went undrafted in 2010 and found his way on to the New York Giants roster. He broke out in the following season, totaling 1,536 receiving yards. In 2012 he started all 16 games and helped the Giants to a Super Bowl win against the New England Patriots. But in the past three seasons, Cruz has dealt with a number of injuries. The most notable one came in 2014 when he tore his patella tendon. He out for about two years of football before returning back last season. It did not seem he was back at the same playing level and the Giants released him earlier this year.

Along with the Ravens, Cruz is expected to visit the Jacksonville Jaguars. His former head coach Tom Coughlin is now the vice president of football operations for the team. According to Stapleton, he thinks the move to Baltimore would give Cruz a good shot at winning and producing on the field.

The Jaguars have a pretty packed depth chart at wide receiver. They definitely do not need the same kind of help that the Ravens need.

Move would make sense

I would be a fan of this move if the Ravens can get Cruz for the right price. Obviously the injuries are a big concern, but when healthy he is a good receiver. This move makes sense for the Ravens and this is how they always do it. We’ve seen it time and time again with players like Boldin and Steve Smith. If Boldin doesn’t want to come back, why not bring in Cruz? I can’t be mad about trying to give help to the receiving core.

What I like about Cruz is his versatility. He can play on the outside, but you can also put him in the slot. Joe Flacco always seems to work well with veteran receivers. If he is able to stay healthy he would be a great pairing with Breshad Perriman and Mike Wallace. I wouldn’t mind seeing him doing some salsa dances in the endzone for the Ravens this season.
