The Baltimore Ravens made their first wave of roster cuts. The first thing you realize is there wasn’t too many surprises.
The Baltimore Ravens are getting closer to the 53 man roster. The Ravens parted ways with 19 players on Friday. The biggest name on the chopping block was probably Keenan Reynolds. Reynolds was a fan favorite because he was a star in Annapolis for the Navy Midshipmen. Reynolds was pretty much a non-factor in two consecutive preseasons. He didn’t record a single reception in the preseason action and his 46 yard punt return wasn’t enough to merit a roster spot. His one big play was also negated by a muffed punt in the finale of the exhibition season.
Is it disappointing to see Reynolds fail to make his way on the roster? Yes, many in Baltimore wanted to embrace a player they were used to rooting for. Is it surprising that he didn’t make it? Absolutely not. At the end of the day he didn’t do anything to get fans excited about him as a Raven.
A lot of easy calls:
There were some other players whose departure didn’t come as a shock. With many projections for the 53 man roster, I don’t think anyone had Griff Whalen, Bobby Rainey or C.J. Board making the team.
John Harbaugh gave the pink slip to Lorenzo Taliaferro, a former fourth round selection. Now Ricky Ortiz is the only fullback on the roster and he could be on the chopping block next. It is becoming more and more likely that Patrick Ricard and a tight end or two will replace Kyle Juszczyk. Thad Lewis was another non-shocking cut. With Flacco’s return for week one looking like a lock, the Ravens will probably keep just two quarterbacks. Whether you like it or not, Ryan Mallett is going to be Flacco’s understudy.
