The Baltimore Ravens should give Quincy Adeboyejo a shot

BALTIMORE, MD - AUGUST 10: Wide receiver Quincy Adeboyejo

The Baltimore Ravens have just three healthy wide receivers right now, why not give undrafted rookie Quincy Adeboyejo a shot?

Yesterday the Baltimore Ravens practiced with just three healthy wide receivers. Michael Campanaro, Chris Moore and recently signed free agent Griff Whalen took the field. Jeremy Maclin and Chris Matthews were limited, while Breshad Perriman and Mike Wallace did not practice.

With the second worst ranked passing attack and uncertainty with injuries come Sunday, the Ravens have problems. There aren’t short-term solutions or quick fixes by any means. Given the situation, the Ravens should switch things up and give undrafted rookie Quincy Adeboyejo a shot off the practice squad.

The Ravens didn’t draft a wide receiver, but Adeboyejo was an undrafted rookie the team went after shortly after the conclusion of the draft.

Adeboyejo stayed with the Ravens throughout training camp and put together some impressive practices. But with like any player, it doesn’t matter unless that translates on to the field. Adeboyejo finished the preseason with three catches for 31 yards and wasn’t overly impressive. With the likes of Tim White and other rookies making plays, Adeboyejo didn’t stand out from the crowd.

Adeboyejo was eventually cut, cleared waivers and re-signed to the Ravens’ practice squad. Since then, he’s been on the practice squad through the first six weeks of the season.

What do the Ravens have to lose?

Given what we’ve seen from the Ravens’ wide receivers this season, why not give Adeboyejo a shot? At the very least he brings the offense a spark we really haven’t seen this season. Adeboyejo has the size at 6-3 and could be the possession receiver the Ravens lack.

The Ravens signed Griff Whalen yesterday, but I didn’t see much more out of him in the preseason than Adeboyejo. If anything, Whalen is an exact replica of what the Ravens already have in Michael Campanaro. This offense doesn’t need another player who can play the slot. Joe Flacco needs a receiver who he can rely on to play the sticks and pick up first downs in crucial situations. Adeboyejo won’t be that guy right away, but the Ravens won’t really know what they have with him until he gets a shot.

Perriman took a vicious hit last Sunday and there’s no telling when he’ll return. Concussions can be anywhere from a week to an entire season. If he misses an extended period of time, the Ravens should at explore their options. What have Moore, Campanaro or Matthews proven in the passing game this season? I understand their special teams presence, but the Ravens need receivers who can also be factors in the passing game.
