Hey Kiko Alonso, you’re a dirty player

BALTIMORE, MD - OCTOBER 26: Quarterback Joe Flacco
BALTIMORE, MD - OCTOBER 26: Quarterback Joe Flacco

I still cannot get over how dirty Kiko Alonso’s hit on Joe Flacco was. It was completely uncalled for and he should have been ejected from the game.

It’s a new day and Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso is still a dirty player. In the Ravens 40-0 shutout over the Fins last night, Alonso laid this dirty hit on Joe Flacco in the second quarter.

As Flacco went down for the slide close to a first down, Alonso blatantly laid his shoulder into Flacco’s helmet. The hit knocked Flacco’s helmet off and sent him straight into concussion protocol. As expected, the Ravens ruled Flacco out of the game with a concussion and he also received stitches in his ear.

After the hit, Ravens center Ryan Jensen rightfully came in and leveled Alonso. It caused an all-out brawl and even John Harbaugh was furious. Harbaugh declined to comment on Alonso’s hit in the post-game press conference, but we are all aware of his thoughts.

Call that a clean hit and you’re lying to yourself. There was absolutely no need for Alonso to lower his shoulder on that play. Flacco was already in the motion of sliding and once he does that, he’s ruled as a defenseless player. What infuriates me the most isn’t just the hit, but the fact that Alonso stayed in the game. Sure a 15-yard personal foul penalty is great and all but that’s a hit worthy of an ejection.

Alonso will get suspended for the hit and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it more be more than a game. Even with that said, he should have been ejected on the spot. Marshawn Lynch can get ejected for making contact with an official last week but Alonso can’t be ejected for a dirty hit? It makes no sense to me. The NFL preaches player safety and even in a quarterback-driven league, there was no real punishment for the hit. If this was college Alonso would’ve been gone with no questions asked.

If the hit doesn’t prompt a discussion on player safety then I don’t know what will. Have fun on your suspension Kiko, you’ve proven you’re nothing better than a Bush League player.
