After re-signing on a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, details of Brent Urban’s contract have been reported.
The Baltimore Ravens officially announced the re-signing of defensive end Brent Urban Tuesday afternoon. Urban returns for a fifth season in Baltimore after missing most of the 2017 season with a Lisfranc foot injury. Behind center Ryan Jensen, Urban was seen as one of the team’s top free agent targets. Much to their delight, here’s back for one more year.
When the signing was announced, contract details were not released. Three days later, we now have that answer.
According to the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec, Urban will have a base salary of $1 million included with incentives.

Russell Street Report’s Brian McFarland also added that Urban’s contract includes a $100K bonus. His official cap hit will be $1.1 million in 2018. Any other incentives reported at a later date will count against the 2019 cap.
DE Brent Urban's 1-deal did indeed contain a $1M base salary and also includes a $100K bonus. Cap # is $1.1M. NLFPA records currently show no incentives being included in the deal, but in the past (Pitta), those have been entered at a later date, so TBD, I guess. https://t.co/q3D0bN7TiT

That’s a very manageable number for the Ravens. The team is essentially giving Urban a one-year “prove it” type deal. This is common to see with players who have high potential but have been limited because of injury. Urban has played a full 16-game season just once in four years and battled a number of injuries.
The contract is a small cap hit and could prove to be a steal if Urban can stay healthy. When on the field, he has the ability to dominate with his 6-7 frame. The entire interior of the defensive line is under contract heading into the 2018 season. It’s a deep group consisting of an array of talent and Urban will be an important factor. The Ravens still had plenty of struggles stopping the run last season and need depth to have a quality rotation for an entire season.
Fans should be happy with this deal. It’s not a splash signing but a quality one. Most of the emphasis this offseason has been on adding offensive weapons but it’s important to keep the defense intact, especially up front.

Lisfranc foot injuries can be tricky like we’ve seen with Jimmy Smith in the past, but here’s to hoping Urban comes back strong in 2018. He’s an under-the-radar player that could have a significant impact on the defenses’ success this season.
