Defensive backs:

  1. Jimmy Smith
  2. Marlon Humphrey
  3. Tavon Young
  4. Maurice Cannady
  5. Brandon Carr
  6. Anthony Averett
  7. Eric Weddle
  8. Tony Jefferson
  9. DeShon Elliott

Here is why:

The Ravens may have the best secondary in the entire NFL, it’s hard to imagine a team being deeper in the back end of their defense. Jimmy Smith and Marlon Humphrey are players who the Ravens can lean on as shutdown cornerbacks. The Ravens have several players who thrive in the slot, which gives Don Martindale a lot of freedom as the new defensive coordinator. In a passing league, pass defense is important and the Ravens have it.

Looking at the safety positions, DeShon Elliott makes things very interesting. He is raw but he is talented enough to be a starter. Eric Weddle is the leader of the defense, coming off a strong season. It’s not quite the pressure Flacco is under from the selection of Jackson, but Elliott will most likely be Weddle’s replacement in the coming years. Anthony Levine just had an operation on his foot. While he is a player the Ravens love, the Ravens have plenty of talent at his position. I would bet that Levine makes the roster, but I’m going to wait and see here. Elliott could take over the hybrid safety linebacker role in sub packages.

Special Teams:

  1. Justin Tucker
  2. Sam Koch
  3. Morgan Cox

Justin Tucker, Sam Koch and Morgan Cox are obviously going to be on the 53 man roster. This doesn’t need to be explained at all. It will be very interesting to see who the Ravens keep at other positions to help their special teams units. There you have it. These are the players that should not be anywhere close to the roster bubble.
