Here are five players that could find themselves in the running to be the Baltimore Ravens most valuable player:

5. Jimmy Smith

It is a very big if, but if Jimmy Smith plays a full 16 game season the impact would be incredible. Smith is one of the best cornerbacks in the National Football League. His injury history has troubled the Ravens at the worst times. The fact that the Ravens have looked so drastically different when he is out of the game, shows you how important he is. Any player whose presence is that important could be in the running for the team’s most valuable cornerback.

With Smith in the lineup, the Ravens pass defense looks intimidating. Marlon Humphrey is on his way to being elite himself, and the Ravens have a handful of good cornerbacks behind Smith and Humphrey. When Smith is on the field the Ravens have the potential to have two shutdown cornerbacks. This means that the Ravens can take away the opposing teams two best weapons on the outside.

Smith and Humphrey means that quarterbacks have to pick their poison. Both cornerbacks can make them pay for a bad throw. Smith could be the difference between a win and a loss, we’ve seen that enough to know. The Ravens have missed the playoffs two years in a row, and one more win would have gotten them into the postseason. This makes Smith about as valuable of a player on the entire roster. Unlike previous seasons, the Ravens are equipped to get by without Smith for a patch or two. However there is a big difference between getting by and throttling the opponent’s passing attack.
