1. The battle at inside linebacker between Kenny Young and Patrick Onwuasor

The battle for inside linebacker is the most interesting one. Patrick Onwuasor is capable. He has proven that he can be a steady hand next to C.J. Mosley. The problem is that “Peanut” Onwuasor has never blown us away or exceeded expectations. Ravens fans knew when Kenny Young was drafted, that the battle was on.

The reason Young is so exciting is because he is a great athlete. It’s no knock on Onwuasor, who has some valuable experience to say that Young has the more athletic ability. From the standpoint of raw athletic ability, Young wins the battle. If Baltimore sees Young win the job in the middle of the defense the speed of the second level of their defense would be unfathomably good.

After one preseason game the positional battle is at a stalemate. Young looked good in his debut, but Onwuasor didn’t look bad either. This is the most interesting thing about the Ravens defense this preseason. In a more aggressive defense, a linebacker starting next to Mosley could get to do a bit of everything. If the Ravens can get more out of this position, good things are going to happen. The Ravens Flock should pay attention to both players against the Rams. The team needs one of them to step up.
