Setting a franchise record typically means something good happened. The Ravens defense recorded 11 sacks and with the record they got a 21-0 victory:

The Baltimore Ravens sacked Marcus Mariota 11 times in their 21-0 win over the Tennessee Titans. The Baltimore Ravens, who are known for defense, have never had a better day getting after the quarterback. Za’Darius Smith led the way with three sacks. Patrick Onwuasor had two. Terrell Suggs, Matt Judon, Kenny Young, Tony Jefferson and Anthony Levine each had one.

The Titans offense had no positives in this game. Marcus Mariota managed to get just over 100 yards in the passing game. The Titans rushed for a total of 55 yards. The Ravens defense came into this game with a defense that was top five in just about every single statistical category. This game was a huge boost for the defensive statistics, because this kind of beat down just shouldn’t happen in the NFL.

Looking at the box score on ESPN.com makes it hard to believe. Here are some takeaways from the game. The Ravens ran 32 more plays on offense than the Titans did. Baltimore won the time of possession battle with almost 40 minutes with the football. When you account for all the sacks, the Titans had only 106 total yards. That’s not a game, that’s a massacre.

The Titans were shut out, but they were shut down in totality. The Ravens secondary swallowed up the Titans receiving options. The front seven bullied the Titans offensive line. It has to make you feel good for Don Martindale. Martindale took over the defense from Dean Pees. Pees is now the Titans defensive coordinator, and he had to watch Martindale’s unit reach heights he never could achieve.

The difference between Pees and Martindale was clear in this game. Pees always tries to keep everything in front of his defense, and the strategy often nets him a good defensive result. Martindale calls plays to completely dominate the opponent. This was a big moment for Martindale. His defense has done some incredible things this season, however this was the crowning moment for his defense.

The Titans aren’t exactly an offense that is firing on all cylinders. That doesn’t mean that the Ravens didn’t do something impressive. They had a history making performance. If C.J. Mosley didn’t go down in the Bengals game, it’s insane to think the pace this defense could be on. The fact of the matter is that the Ravens have the best defense in the NFL. Because of that they have a chance to beat anybody in the NFL.
