News broke out today that Eric DeCosta would be officially named the Baltimore Ravens GM starting January 11, 2019. What should we expect moving forward?
We’ve known for quite sometime that General Manager Ozzie Newsome planned to step down following the 2018 season and move into a smaller role within the team’s front office. It then became clear from every perspective that Asst. GM Eric DeCosta would take the reigns from Newsome as the team’s GM of the future.
Eric DeCosta has been a hot-name for quite some time in the NFL world, as team’s who’ve looked to hire a new GM would often ask the Baltimore Ravens front office to interview DeCosta. DeCosta would consistently decline interviews, stating that he had full intentions of remaining in Baltimore to become their eventual GM.
Well, that news became officially official on January 10, 2019. Eric DeCosta has signed a contract and will be named the team’s General Manager on Friday January 11, 2019.
What does this mean for the Baltimore Ravens moving forward? Well for starters, the Ravens couldn’t have had a better success plan for Newsome’s eventual retirement than DeCosta. DeCosta has a strong relationship with the team’s owner Steve Bisciotti, and has been groomed for quite some time to become the team’s leader of the front office.
DeCosta is an excellent scout, who seemingly drafted his quarterback of the future in Lamar Jackson during the 2018 NFL Draft. With Jackson on the roster, it seems likely that DeCosta will capitalize on his young quarterback and build a championship caliber team around him. We can safely expect him to be extremely busy during the 2019 off-season’s Free Agency, as well as being aggressive in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Now that the Baltimore Ravens have officially declared Eric DeCosta to be the team’s GM of the future, a new era has seemingly begun in Charm City. We should expect to see a similar drafting style to what Ozzie Newsome made us accustomed to, but here’s hoping DeCosta can land us a wide receiver! In all seriousness, DeCosta is the perfect replacement for Newsome, and Ravens Flock should be ecstatic about this news.
