Round 7: DaMarkus Lodge

It’s now the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft and pickings across the board are slim. If the Baltimore Ravens have still neglected the wide receiver spot until now, there still remains a few options to fancy. Among all the names left, DaMarkus Lodge from Ole Miss would be the one who shines brighter than the rest.

Lodge would become the third Ole Miss wide receiver to be drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft alone, speaking volumes to their talent pool. Compared to elite talents like teammates D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown, Lodge is certainly a step-or-two behind them. However, Lodge is still a sizeable man at 6’2″ 204-lbs. Even as the team’s third receiver, Lodge was still productive with Rebels, scoring 11 touchdowns over the last two seasons.

Lodge’s biggest strength comes at the line of scrimmage, where his release is incredible. The way he’s able to blow past corners on a regular basis and create separation in special. If Lodge can become more defined as a pass catcher, there’s no telling what he could do down the road.

For the Baltimore, Lodge presents that lottery ticket the team has known to take in the tail-end of the draft. Names like Aaron Mellette (shudders) and Michael Campanaro were failed examples of this, but a seventh round pick is supposed to be a gamble. However with Lodge, this gamble feels much better than the previously aforementioned names, The Ravens would be wise to take a flier on DaMarkus Lodge this late in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Baltimore Ravens have always been in dire need of a wide receiver and the 2019 NFL Draft looks as good as any to take some chances. The talent pool is littered throughout the entire draft, so the team has no excuse not to walk away with a guy or two to try out. If nothing else, the team owes it to Lamar Jackson to build around him properly.
