On Thursday March 21, 2019, the Baltimore Ravens reached a deal to bring back quarterback Robert Griffin III, and the move couldn’t be any smarter.

With the Baltimore Ravens officially moved on from quarterback Joe Flacco, it was essential that the team find a suitable backup quarterback option for Lamar Jackson. With Jackson still getting his feet wet at the NFL level and needing guidance, it had to be at the top of Baltimore’s off-season to-do list. Thankfully, the team was able to bring back Robert Griffin III.

RGIII returns to Charm City on a two-year contract to be the team’s primary backup and stay Jackson’s mentor. Considering how slim the pickings are for both the remaining Free Agency class and the quarterback crop for the 2019 NFL Draft, the Ravens made the best business move available by resigning Robert Griffin III.

As a rookie, Lamar Jackson showed off some incredible potential, but he certainly had his fair-share of warts, mainly as a passer. Coming out of college back in 2012, Robert Griffin III was an all-around brilliant quarterback. Combined with his all-world athleticism, RGIII was a talented thrower with ridiculously good mobility skills. Had it not been for entering the same draft as Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III could’ve easily been the no.1 overall selection in 2012.

Unfortunately, Griffin suffered tragic injuries due to risky play and poor coaching staffs. Griffin has made his was around the league and became a forgotten about commodity. While his starting days are certainly a distant memory, RGIII proved in 2018 that he is capable of being a leader and teacher as a team’s backup option. This made it vital that the Baltimore Ravens resigned him.

It would be difficult for Robert Griffin III to look at Lamar Jackson and not see a younger version of himself. Because of this, it seems that Griffin has every intention on helping the 22-year old quarterback learn from his teacher’s mistakes and become what Griffin envisioned himself to be.

Next. Lamar Jackson is the reason Ravens must get the wide receivers right. dark

With RGIII returning to Baltimore for 2019, the Ravens front office has made it clear that building around Lamar Jackson is the team’s goal and fortifying the position was imperative. Now, Robert Griffin can continue to be Jackson’s teacher and groom him to become a true franchise quarterback. The Ravens have made a few moves this off-season, but resigning Robert Griffin III has been their smartest yet.
