With the 85th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Louisiana Tech edge rusher Jaylon Ferguson. Here’s our initial thoughts.

After waiting an ungodly amount of time between their first round pick and their third round pick, the Baltimore Ravens finally made their selection: Louisiana Tech edge rusher Jaylon Ferguson.

Ferguson, as some of you may know, set the NCAA record for career sacks at 45.0, including 17.5 in 2018. Those numbers are outstanding, but here’s the best part… he broke Terrell Suggs career sack record in college football. How fitting is it that now he is replacing Suggs in Baltimore?

Honestly, Ferguson is the team’s best chance right now, considering both Tyus Bowser and Tim Williams have flopped thus far in their respective NFL careers. Matt Judon is a monster, and he will likely continue his dominance moving forward. Across from him, however, is a void in need of filling.

The Ravens also don’t have much of a pass rush being generated from their defensive line, putting that much more emphasis on the team for getting edge pressure. If Ferguson can channel his production from college and translate it to the pros, Baltimore might’ve found themselves a steal.

With all the talented edge rushers in the 2019 NFL Draft class, it was easy for Jaylon Ferguson to have his name overlooked. Considering players like Nick Bosa, Josh Allen, and Montez Sweat dominated headlines, Ferguson was an afterthought at times. Worse yet, at the 2019 Senior Bowl he was overshadowed by Sweat and Old Dominion’s Oshane Ximines. Despite the production, Ferguson was slept on.

While I personally am not totally sold, you would be hard-pressed to find better value at the pick and at edge rusher than Jaylon Ferguson. He could easily prove me wrong because of his attitude and swagger, and Ravens Flock should be excited over the potential of Jaylon Ferguson.
