Baltimore Ravens: Robert Griffin III is the NFL’s best backup QB

The NFL is so concerned with the starting quarterback spot that teams neglect having a good backup. The Baltimore Ravens have theirs in Robert Griffin III.

To say that the Baltimore Ravens quarterback room is good would be an understatement. This may come as a surprise considering the lack of elite quarterback play they franchise has seen since its birth in 1996, but it’s true. Between Lamar Jackson, Robert Griffin III, and Trace McSorley, Baltimore has three solid players at their disposal.

Of those three quarterbacks, Robert Griffin III might be the most valuable of the bunch. That may seem like an asinine statement to make of a backup quarterback, but it couldn’t be more true.

The NFL is the biggest team sport there is because of the vast amount of positions needed to be filled on both sides of the ball. Still, more often than not you’re only as good as your quarterback is. Because of this cold-hard fact, teams are always frantically trying to find their franchise quarterback.

Team futures are mortgaged to move up high in the NFL Draft to try and find these guys, and dump loads of money are spent to keep even the mediocre quarterbacks around. It’s simply the nature of the game, but while teams are trying to get their starting quarterback they overlook the need for a solid backup option.

To a certain extent, having a good backup is sometimes an overrated and unnecessary piece of the puzzle. Teams like the New England Patriots don’t need high-end backups when you have a starter like Tom Brady. But, the biggest issue with not having a suitable backup is knowing that at any moment something could happen to your starter and you need to turn to your backup quarterback…
