3. A boost from the secondary:

A great pass rush makes the secondary less exposed. A great secondary gives the pass rushers a boost. It works both ways and the secondary may have to lead the charge for the Ravens. Coverage sacks a very real thing. The secondary needs to be stifling and if it is, it buys the pass rush an extra second. Hesitation is a trait that quarterbacks can’t afford. The Ravens need to shut down receivers and tight ends and make the quarterback hold onto the football just a second longer than he should.

The Ravens secondary is supposed to be one of the best defensive backfields in the NFL. If the Ravens play up to their potential, the secondary is going to make this defense viable. The pass rush needs to be good, however the secondary can give it a boost for even better results. Shutdown corners and two great starting safeties have a big impact on what happens in the front seven.

The ability to get to the quarterback is incredibly important. It boils down to three things for the Ravens. First, there needs to be players outperforming their offseason expectations. A monster year from Jaylon Ferguson would be a nice thing to have. Tyus Bowser turning up the heat would work as well. Secondly an inside pass rush must be developed and any pass rush the Ravens need after that has to be created through the genius of Martindale. Finally, the secondary has to make the pass rushers jobs easier. Through focusing on these three elements the Ravens can figure out how to have enough in the pass rushing department.
