Major Takeaways as Ravens beat Eagles 26-15
By Ian Schultz
Focusing on the defense:
Defensively, the story for me was the play of the first team defense. Yes Carson Wentz didn’t play. The Ravens defense still managed to stifle the Eagles offense for the entire first half giving up 87 total yards and 0 points. Tim Williams continues to look like a potential difference maker as he wrecked several plays in the backfield throughout the night. Chris Wormley and Pat Ricard both put exclamation points on strong preseasons.
Marlon Humphrey is bonkers good. He can cover, he flies upfield to shut down running plays, and he can lower the boom on folks. He looks like an All-Pro in the making. Earl Thomas had a nice night as well in his first extended action. The addition of Thomas will prove to be a huge upgrade over the departed Eric Weddle. Tyus Bowser and Kenny Young both had nice nights as well in extended minutes.
The bad defensively starts with Maurice Canady. I am sure Canady is a great guy, but he ain’t much a of cornerback. Canady was picked on all night, primarily by JJ Arcega-Whiteside (one of my draft crushes) who finished with 8 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown catch. He committed penalties, he trailed routes, and overall had the worst performance I have seen someone have in the preseason in quite some time. He should be on the bubble AT BEST.
Matt Judon committed a penalty covering kicks (WHY). Stanley Jean-Baptiste had a rough night in coverage as well as Cyrus Jones. Jones was better this week than last week but he seems to be struggling to gain traction in an increased role.
I couldn’t write this piece without mentioning Justin Tucker. He is a robot. He hit field goals from 49 with ease, 32, and a 43 yard extra point off of a penalty. He is the greatest kicker ever. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. We are unbelievably blessed.
