Baltimore Ravens: 2 things we didn’t learn this preseason
We learned a lot this preseason about the Baltimore Ravens. Here are the two things we haven’t learned about the 2019 version of the purple and black:
1. Do the Baltimore Ravens have enough pass rush?
Do the Baltimore Ravens have enough pass rush? It’s a fair question. The Ravens have seen several bursts off the edge from Tyus Bowser and Tim Williams. That doesn’t mean that they can do it consistently. John Harbaugh and company always knew that Williams and Bowser were incredible athletes. The biggest problem the Ravens have going into the regular season is not knowing how much to expect from their pass rushers.
The outside linebackers didn’t wow us this preseason. Shane Ray is looking more and more like a roster cut. He’s barely done anything of note this preseason. Jaylon Ferguson had a fairly disappointing showing. He had no sacks and he really looked like a rookie. The Ravens didn’t have anything new develop at this position. They knew they would have to count on a combination of Matt Judon, Pernell McPhee, Williams and Bowser. Nothing here has changed and nothing has actually been proven in the exhibition games.
The only thing that could be a hindrance to this defense is the amount of pressure they can get on the quarterback. The defensive line didn’t show that they could help the problem with consistent interior pass rush. Pat Ricard had some good pass rush. You have to wonder how much the two way player will do of that against starters and in a game that counts. Baltimore saw just enough out of Williams and Bowser to prevent a panic. They didn’t learn that the help around Matt Judon was completely useless but they didn’t exactly learn how useful it will be either.
