Welcome to the NFL, rookie:

Torrey Smith didn’t light the league on fire until his third NFL game vs. the then-St. Louis Rams, and my goodness he torched those poor defensive backs.

On the day, Smith recorded five receptions for 157-yards and three touchdowns. His first three receptions resulted in the three aforementioned touchdowns, coming from 74-yards, 41-yards, and 18-yards. Smith became just the 12th player in NFL history to score three touchdowns in a single quarter and the first rookie to accomplish this feat.

As far as breakout performances go, it’s hard to top that. Smith was simply putting on a clinic vs. the Rams and was racing down the field faster than American Pharaoh for the Triple-Crown. It was perfectly clear that he would be what the Baltimore Ravens envisioned he would be: the perfect deep threat for their strong-arm quarterback, Joe Flacco.

The match was made in Heaven and had fans excited for the connection. It took longer than hoped to get going, but it was worth it. Smith’s rookie season was terrific and full of great games, including a Baltimore Ravens rookie record 165 receiving yards in a single-game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. These performances were great, but neither was as important as a single reception was in 2011…
