4. Brandon Scherff:

With Marshal Yanda considering retirement, the Ravens could be looking to add the future at his position. There’s a guard on the market with three Pro Bowl selections on his resume and he’s only 28 years old. The Ravens could be very tempted to sign Scherff. If there was no salary cap in the NFL, it would be a much more tempting move. The Ravens should stay away from Scherff and it has nothing to do with him. It’s just not the right play for Baltimore in free agency.

Look at the Ravens history when it comes to the offensive line. Almost every good player they’ve had up front has come via the NFL Draft. They have drafted Pro Bowl talents like Yanda, Ben Grubbs and Kelechi Osemele. The Ravens have found starters on the third day of the draft with players like Bradley Bozeman and Rick Wagner. Orlando Brown Jr. fell to the Ravens in the third round. If the Ravens had a long history of missing on offensive linemen in the draft, Scherff would make more sense. The offensive line should continue to be built through the NFL Draft.

The Ravens have to think about the future. They have to pay Ronnie Stanley, sooner rather than later. In a few years Orlando Brown Jr. is going to cost them a pretty penny. Bradley Bozeman is becoming one of the best run blocking guards in football and he was a sixth round pick. The affordability of the offensive line won’t last forever.

Signing Scherff would be awesome from a football perspective, especially if Yanda chooses retirement. From a business perspective this move wouldn’t add up. The Ravens have a mostly young offensive line. They have to be able to invest in their home-grown talent when they have to.
