Confidence levels for the defense:

Defensive Line: 6

It’s hard to imagine a Ravens team having a bad defensive line. The Ravens have Brandon Williams and Chris Wormley as very solid players up front. The Ravens could lose Michael Pierce in free agency. Baltimore needs more pass rush from the defensive line. If the Ravens lose Pierce, Williams will be the only elite space eater for the run defense. This is an area of concern, yet there is no reason for panic.

Outside linebacker: 3

We’ve been talking about the Matt Judon situation ever since the Tennessee Titans put the Ravens in the offseason mode of operations. The Ravens have a major decision to make with Judon. Outside of Judon they don’t have a lot to bank on. Jaylon Ferguson could be an up and coming star, yet he isn’t there yet. Tyus Bowser showed that he has a chance to be a good player in his third season. No matter what the Ravens do with the Judon cloud hanging over them, they have to add another player to the mix at outside linebacker.

Inside Linebacker: 4

This is a position the Ravens probably have to get better at. Patrick Onwuasor is an unrestricted free agent and he’s coming off an underwhelming season. Josh Bynes is another free agent for Baltimore. L.J. Fort is a serviceable player yet the Ravens need to add a three down linebacker that can do it all. They came into the season with Chris Board, Kenny Young and Onwuasor at the position and it didn’t prove to be the right combination. This is a major need.

Cornerback: 8

The Ravens have two All-Pro players at the cornerback position. Marlon Humphrey is a dominant cornerback. Marcus Peters is one of the best cornerbacks when it comes to picking off passes. Tavon Young is going to be back in the fold. If the Ravens bring either Jimmy Smith or Brandon Carr back, they should be set at cornerback. This is an elite position group on this roster.

Safety: 8

The Ravens let go of Tony Jefferson and they won’t miss a beat. They gave Chuck Clark an extension for a reason. He’s the starting strong safety of the Ravens for the foreseeable future. Earl Thomas went to the Pro Bowl in his first year with the Ravens. In terms of starters, the Ravens position group is at a 10. The Ravens should probably add a safety to the mix at some point in the NFL Draft. It will be interesting to see what they get out of DeShon Elliott.
