Today I’m answering your burning Ravens questions that were submitted via Twitter:
@VADERSNEWS asks: On paper the Baltimore Ravens appear pretty stacked with few surprising cuts due to the stacked roster. Who do you see being on the short end of cut day that may surprise fans?
Answer: You’re not wrong that the Baltimore Ravens roster is stacked. The Ravens have one of the most complete depth charts in the NFL and it will create some problems when John Harbaugh and company have to start making cuts. I think you have to look at the positions where the Ravens have too much of a crowd to find the odd men out.
The positions of surplus on this roster are cornerbacks and the defensive line. I was asked about this in the last Q&A and I gave the answers of Anthony Averett and Daylon Mack. To keep things interesting though, I’m going to give you one more name. This is a question I keep getting so it must be worth the thought experiment.
Chris Moore is a player I could see getting cut. While he’s a relatively cheap special teams player, he offers almost nothing at the wide receiver position. He had three receptions last year and made a critical mistake against the Browns. On the infamous play, Moore was wide open he lacked the awareness to land in bounds. If the Ravens find a new special teams ace, they may see Moore as an expendable player. Moore is a very good special teams player, especially as a gunner on the punt team.
Marquise Brown, Miles Boykin, Willie Snead, Devin Duvernay and James Proche give the Ravens five wide receivers. If the Ravens decide they need some more veteran help at the position group, Moore would be the most likely odd man out. I doubt the Ravens will go the Antonio Brown direction but there are some receivers they could still land in free agency. Paul Richardson could be an intriguing option if he’s healthy. Demaryius Thomas is another receiver that you could at least take a flyer on.
Proche could end up being the next Moore. He has return ability and he is probably the player who will have to prove himself on special teams before getting the glory on offense. If the Ravens can get good special teams contributions from Proche and a backup safety like Jordan Richards, Moore may not be a roster lock. It would be a surprise, but I can see it.
