Baltimore Ravens training camp: 53 man roster projection
Offensive line and defensive line:
Offensive line:
- Ronnie Stanley
- Orlando Brown Jr.
- Matt Skura
- Bradley Bozeman
- Patrick Mekari
- Tyre Phillips
- D.J. Fluker
- Ben Bredeson
- Ben Powers
The first critique I’m going to hear here is that the Ravens don’t have tackle depth. That’s true, however that’s also how they built the roster. They have a lot of guards and giving up on a player like Ben Powers, who is just coming into his second season seems silly. He was projected to be the starter the second Marshal Yanda retired. Tyre Phillips and D.J. Fluker changed that, but that doesn’t mean that Powers should be cut.
Here’s the thing about offensive tackle, Phillips and Fluker can both be swing tackles. One way or another the Ravens have a back up who is the swing tackle and a starter they can move over to tackle in the worst case scenario. This may be a bold take, but again I’m not forcing a roster spot just because it’s what a team would typically do. That’s not the way the Ravens tend to think and I want to see if they follow that here.
Defensive line:
- Calais Campbell
- Brandon Williams
- Derek Wolfe
- Justin Madubuike
- Broderick Washington
- Jihad Ward
- Justin Ellis
The exciting thing about the defensive line is that Eric DeCosta has gotten rid of the dead weight. They traded Chris Wormley away to a division rival, so he obviously wasn’t a game wrecker. They said good bye to Daylon Mack. There’s not a lot of work to do on the defensive line so you can keep the notable seven. Campbell, Wolfe and Williams are the starters.
Madubuike backs up Campbell, Ward backs up Wolfe and Washington and Ellis back up Brandon Williams. With wise rotation the defensive line has just enough men to always be fresh throughout a game. This defensive line isn’t going to wear down. What does that mean? It means that opponents of the Ravens have to deal with a fresh Campbell in the fourth quarter. Sign me up to watch that all season.
