Who’s Not:

Anthony Averett:

Averett was put in an unfortunate situation. When Averett entered the game Tavon Young had just hurt his knee and is now done for the season. Young at one point was the highest-paid slot corner in the league and his loss is huge. With Young down, Marlon Humphrey will most likely slide inside and Averett and Jimmy Smith will share time at cornerback while Smith may also play some safety.

With a strong defense, and quarterbacks trying to avoid Humphrey and Peters, Averett will need to step up and play better down the stretch. In his career, he has struggled at times with getting beat deep, penalties, and tackling. Coming out of college Averett was a fourth-round pick out of the University of Alabama; expectations were high. So far, his career has been shaky, and now will be his best opportunity to produce.

On Sunday, as soon as Averett got on the field Deshaun Watson started to target him. Averett played 21 defensive snaps and allowed three catches on them. Although his play wasn’t terrible it didn’t inspire a lot of confidence as the Ravens tried to use Anthony Levine Sr. more on defense to keep a rotation of players to fill the spot. In this week’s matchup, it will be interesting to see how Averett will be used. Will he start over Smith? We will have to see if they keep him away from Tyreek Hill, but a good game against a team with this kind of offensive firepower can start his season’s turnaround and jumpstart his career.

For the rest of the season, Averett will get playing time and will be able to make plays. If he cannot improve then he will create a massive hole on the defense and Coach Wink Martindale will need to adjust to give him safety help. Hopefully, he has a rebound performance so Jimmy Smith and his ailing back can slowly be returned into the fold.
