The Secondary

The Ravens are supposed to have their strongest position group in the back end of their defense. Last week, that secondary struggled. New $100 million dollar man Marlon Humphrey had two passes defended but the Chiefs, but on the game quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for four touchdowns and over 350 passing yards. Five different receivers had over five catches and 50 yards on the day.

Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman are two of those receivers, both known for their speed. They each got behind the Ravens secondary and caught touchdowns. Each of these guys averaged over 15 yards per catch and that just cannot happen. Not only this but the tackling throughout the game wasn’t great.

Additionally the Ravens got fooled on two plays allowing lineman Eric Fisher and fullback Anthony Sherman to score touchdowns. This is not exclusively the secondaries fault, but as the last line of defense this reflects poorly. The back end still has plenty of talent between Humphrey, Chuck ClarkJimmy Smith, and Marcus Peters but in this game they got exposed when the pass rush did and didn’t get to Mahomes.

In this game and the previous match ups Mahomes has been incredible picking up the Ravens blitzes and has found success throwing consistently. Although guarding their receiving core isn’t easy, the Ravens couldn’t shut down any of their trio of stars. Clyde Edwards-Helaire had his best game receiving to date. Travis Kelce had six catches for 87 yards and Sammy Watkins was a chain mover all night catching seven passes.

Next. 3 things to watch against the Washington Football Team. dark

A rebound game against a Washington team with a Quarterback who has struggled and a receiving core that could be missing their top wide receiver. Their tight end is also a former Quarterback. The inexperienced should help the Ravens secondary rebound and fix some the lapses they had last week. As the top position group on the team a lot is expected from them. Its now onto next week. Sunday afternoon at the Washington Football team.
