Who’s Not:

Anthony Averett:

Dwayne Haskins Jr. threw the ball 45 times against the Ravens and completed 32 passes. At one point in time, it seemed like he was throwing it directly at Averett no matter what receiver was on him. The former fourth-round pick out of Alabama has struggled to find the field but against Washington, he played in over 80% of defensive snaps. With injuries to many in the secondary, Averett is being counted on to help out and use what he has learned over the last few years to find success.

Unfortunately, in a secondary that played relatively well, Averett was the weak link. Against Washington, he allowed 25% of Haskins’ completions. Balls thrown to Averett’s man were completed 8/9 times on the day for 63 yards. That’s a strong 95.8 passer rating. He also missed a tackle in this game. Dontrelle Inman caught two first-down passes on him, Terry McLaurin ran a slant against him early in the second half and Averett looked lost trailing behind him. Although he has good size and speed he has struggled repeatedly.

For the season he has allowed 85% of passes thrown his way to be caught including all three against the Chiefs. While the Ravens are using Marlon Humphrey in the slot due to Tavon Young‘s injury, Averett is taking the bulk of snaps outside. To date that hasn’t been effective. Averett doesn’t have much time to turn the season around before the Ravens might be looking at other options like former Raven Brandon Carr.

Moving forward Averett will continue to get chances, as Jimmy Smith is mainly playing safety/guarding tight ends and safety Anthony Levine Sr. is injured. If he can’t prove himself this week against rookie Joe Burrow and an underrated receiver core it may be time to cut their losses.
