8. Buffalo Bills, 6-2 (8)

They got the Patriots monkey off their back, taking home a 24-21 win, but they didn’t really do it with a resounding statement the way you might have liked to see. Still, they are good on both sides of the ball, and a contender this season.

7. New Orleans Saints, 6-2 (9)

They toughed out an overtime win over the Bears, but is that really something to get excited over? Well, it is when the Saints were missing Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Still a very good team, there are more questions than at the start of the year.

6. Green Bay Packers, 5-2 (3)

The Packers look like Super Bowl contenders one game, and a team destined for one-and-done status the next. They looked like the latter against the Vikings in a losing effort most recently. Stay tuned, as they are one of a few teams who share this outlook.

5. Baltimore Ravens, 5-2 (4)

The Ravens are similar to the Packers — but they vary from quarter to quarter, and possession to possession. They are ranked above Green Bay because losing to the Steelers is better than losing to the Vikings, but that is the only reason.

The team seemed to find a little more of its old identity on offense this past week, piling up the rushing yards, but four turnovers from the defending MVP, and two handfuls of costly penalties, cost them a win. They have another tough matchup this week against the Colts, and if they don’t fix their problems, they could tumble down these rankings and the standings.

This is still a very good team, even with its warts. A win this week puts them on pace for a 12-4 campaign, which is great. A loss, conversely, puts them at a 10-6 clip, which is good and playoff-bound, but not on the elite side of things. They are better than they are currently showing.

I think.
