3. Get out to a fast start

The Baltimore Ravens are the 6-2 team here, not the New England Patriots. For once, the Ravens are the favorites going up to Gillette Stadium. The Ravens have to get out to a fast start in this game for several reasons.

First, the longer the Patriots are contentiously fighting with the purple and black, the longer they believe they can win this game. It’s kind of weird saying this but the Patriots are in a bad spot. They have three wins and it’s week 10. Time isn’t on their side, they have to start racking up wins and they have two red hot teams above them in the AFC East. If the Patriots win on Sunday Night Football, they may be able to start creeping up to the seventh and final playoff spot in the conference.

If the Patriots lose this game, this season could actually be over for them. If the Ravens lay it on the Patriots strong and the game looks like it could get out of hand, human nature could set in for the Patriots. They could feel defeated before they even take the loss. They could feel desperate and do stupid things, things Bill Belichick coached teams just don’t do.

Secondly, a slow start would put pressure on the Ravens. They don’t want to blow another big game in the national spotlight and playing the Patriots is always a meaningful game for Baltimore. If the Ravens were to let this one feel in question, there is going to be a lot of nervous Ravens fans. You don’t want to flirt with disaster. You want to clear it out of the realm of possibility before you can even start to worry.

Finally, this is not just about Sunday evening. the Ravens have to start picking up steam for the playoff push. They have to start getting hot so that when the playoffs come around, the Ravens aren’t a one and done team. If the Ravens have the magic from last season inside of them, they have to find it. This would be a good game to start figuring it out.
