3 big things from Baltimore Ravens 47-42 win over Browns
3. The wide receiver problem isn’t going away, Jackson doesn’t care:
The Baltimore Ravens have a wide receiver problem that isn’t magically getting fixed when Dez Bryant comes into the game. If you’re a Ravens fan right now, you’re probably convinced the Ravens couldn’t make anything work at the wide receiver position. That’s fair. It’s too fair for comfort.
Marquise Brown is in his head. It’s almost surprising that he caught the touchdown pass that saved the Ravens. It’s almost incredible that Jackson didn’t take off in the run just because he threw it to Brown. Look, Jackson trusts Brown more than I do at the moment. That’s a good thing. Jackson is the cure to all that ails the offense because he’s often all that helps the offense.
What Jackson just proved on Monday Night Football is that he will work with what he has. If I had Lamar Jackson’s speed and elusiveness I run on that fourth down. I’m not putting a chance into this equation. I’m not risking anything, I’m getting five practically promised yards on the ground. That’s what makes his decision amazing. It was a bold one. He trusted his arm and his teammate. A teammate with a pattern of drops, one who he continues to reward regardless of that pattern.
The Ravens have learned one thing this season. Brown isn’t their number one wide receiver of the future. He could end up being a good player, he’s not the Tyreek Hill like player they thought he would be. It’s early enough that Brown could prove me wrong, but it’s an evidence-based claim.
Devin Duvernay is a gamer and the Ravens can’t seem to figure that out. James Proche is the epitome of an unknown quantity because he gets no chances to shine. The Ravens need more talent at wide receiver. Sure. They also don’t know what to do with this position.
Guess what? The Ravens have a quarterback who doesn’t care. Jackson just showed the team that he can will his team to victory. Having to change the cleats, dealing with cramps, dealing with a bad offensive line, it doesn’t matter. He will dig down and get it done. I have never believed in an athlete the way I do Lamar Jackson. He’s a champion of a person, he will win it all at some point. I’ll die on that hill, gladly.
