The Ravens’ decision to trade rookie cornerback Shaun Wade this week opened up the door for a number of young defensive backs on the roster to potentially make the team.

One of those players is Chris Westry.

Signed away from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, Westry is a physical specimen who stands at 6-foot-4 and is reminiscent of a young Jimmy Smith.

Following a strong summer, Westry has put himself in an excellent position to push for a roster spot, despite a logjam at the cornerback position.

But he’ll need a strong showing in tonight’s game to make a statement and force Baltimore to keep him around.

Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters, Tavon Young, Smith, Anthony Averett, Brandon Stephens, DeShon Elliott, and Chuck Clark are all guaranteed roster spots.

Behind them, the likes of Westry, Anthony Levine, Geno Stone, Ar’Darius Washington, and Nigel Warrior are seemingly fighting for what is likely two (maximum three) spots.

Westry has the size and athleticism that likely give him the highest upside of the bunch. But he doesn’t necessarily occupy the same role that Wade would have — unlike Washington who can play in the slot.

But Westry could force the Ravens’ hand with another standout performance tonight.
