Ravens vs. Chiefs: 5 key matchups to watch in Week 2
By Jihad Miller
2. Ravens secondary vs. Chiefs receivers
The Ravens defense needs to have a bounce-back performance after what happened against the Raiders last week.
They consistently failed to get off the field when it mattered most. However, that stand at the goal-line in overtime was highly impressive.
Now the Ravens’ have a more difficult task as they’ll try to contain the Chiefs. They will have their hands full trying to stop Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Mecole Hardman.
Hopefully, Jimmy Smith will be back in this game. His return would be a huge help in the effort to contain Kelce.
If the Ravens do play press coverage, it will be interesting to see where Marlon Humphrey lines up. Will he be guarding Hill or Kelce? Though knowing Baltimore’s scheme, Humphrey will play all over the field.
The Ravens’ biggest objective needs to be to negate the big play. Chuck Clark and DeShon Elliott will most likely be playing deep zone coverage a lot in this game.
The Ravens prefer to have one or both of them close to the line scrimmage because that is their biggest strength.
But against the Chiefs, that is a recipe for disaster. Over their last three meetings, the Chiefs’ offense has been virtually unstoppable against the Ravens’ defense.
However, the Ravens will most likely stay true to their identity, so expect them to use some exotic blitz packages in this game.
If that is the case, they cannot allow the Chiefs receivers to get behind them. Getting into a shootout with that team would be a disaster for the Ravens.
