Ravens: Analyst says Baltimore should trade for RB Marlon Mack
By Kristen Wong
Coming out of their bye week, the Baltimore Ravens could make some dramatic changes to their roster by the trade deadline.
One change involves a shake-up in the Ravens’ running back room. With Ty’Son Williams, Devonta Freeman, Latavius Murray, and Le’Veon Bell, the Ravens seem to have more than enough running backs than they know what to do with.
Williams was recently listed as a potential trade candidate, though, and on the off chance Baltimore is looking for another quality running back, they may spring for Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack.
Patrik Walker of CBS Sports proposes this trade:
"“There needs to be more balance in Baltimore, though, which is to say there has to be someone else opposing defenses have to scheme for. Mack and the Colts are ready to part ways, and the Ravens are desperately in need of a young, talented halfback. If the Colts are willing to deal within the conference, they should answer the Ravens call, assuming the phone rings.”"
Walker suggests Baltimore should give the Colts a call, which really isn’t too presumptuous to say. A call is just a call.
Could the Baltimore Ravens acquire Marlon Mack at the trade deadline?
Walker does point to the larger underlying issues in Baltimore’s roster: their recently deflated running game.
Lamar Jackson can’t do everything, and currently, he’s head and shoulders above every running back on the roster with 480 rushing yards.
Behind him, Murray has 59 carries for 212 yards, Williams has 33 carries for 180 yards, Freeman has 20 carries for 109 yards, and Bell has 17 carries for 34 yards.
While each running back has gotten to the end zone this year, their efficiency remains a bit of a disappointment.
Of course, Baltimore can’t expect the unit to have the same production that J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards had last year, and with those two star running backs out, the Ravens were bound to feel the effects at some point in the season.
Trading for a talented, younger, and experienced back in Marlon Mack could potentially solve some issues in the Ravens’ backfield, but it could also just add another body to the running back room.
Baltimore will have to decide whether their current ball-carriers are worth developing (mainly Williams), or if they want to search for more options externally.
Mack is one of the best running back on the market right now, and with other teams looking to explore his market, the Ravens might have to act fast.
