The Baltimore Ravens made sure to retain a little extra depth in the secondary on Monday when the team announced that they had re-signed veteran cornerback Kevon Seymour.
Seymour was originally signed to the team’s practice squad in September and would be elevated numerous times before being officially promoted to the active roster.
Injuries hit the Ravens’ cornerback room hard in 2021 and Seymour was one of the players forced into action as a result. He would go on to appear in nine games even making two starts down the stretch when the injuries really started to pile up.
The Ravens learned this past season that you can never have too many healthy cornerbacks, and the re-signing of Seymour is proof that they’re following that mantra.
Kevon Seymour gives the Ravens additional depth at cornerback
A sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Seymour spent his rookie season with the Buffalo Bills appearing in 15 games and even making three starts.
He was traded to the Carolina Panthers just prior to the start of the 2017 season and he’d find a home in Carolina for a couple of seasons playing all 16 games that year while making two starts.
Unfortunately, those would be the last games Seymour would play in the NFL until 2020 as an injury kept him sidelined in 2018 while he sat out of football entirely in 2019 after being released by the Panthers in September.
Seymour made two appearances with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 and returned with the team in the summer of 2021 before being released as part of final roster cuts. A couple of weeks later, the Ravens came calling.
Seymour received a golden opportunity to make an impact with the likes of Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters, Anthony Averett, Jimmy Smith, and Chris Westry all battling injuries at various points.
The 28-year-old played at least 69 defensive snaps in each of the team’s final four games of the season — a testament to how thin the Ravens were in the secondary.
The Ravens clearly liked what they saw because they ultimately decided to bring him back. Seymour will likely return this summer to compete for a roster spot.
