The Baltimore Ravens have already seen some changes made to their coaching staff this offseason, some voluntary and some involuntary. And it looks like a couple more changes are on the way.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Thursday that the Ravens were moving on from inside linebackers coach Rob Ryan after just one season with the team.

The next day, The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reported that outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins would also not be returning to the team. Each coach will be leaving for very different reasons, but neither is expected to return.

While the circumstances surrounding Ryan’s departure aren’t clear, Wilkins is expected to pursue opportunities with recently departed former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

The Ravens will be searching for two new defensive assistant coaches

Wilkins’ departure does come as somewhat of a surprise seeing as though the young, homegrown assistant was seemingly being groomed as Martindale’s heir apparent.

However, the Ravens opted to go with another former assistant in Mike Macdonald instead leaving Wilkins to reconsider his plans. Evidently, he wants to follow Martindale to his next destination, something that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Still, the Ravens will now have two vacancies on their defensive staff to fill. Former Ravens linebacker Zach Orr is reportedly a potential candidate to fill Ryan’s role with the 29-year-old expected to interview for the position on Monday, per Zrebiec.

Orr spent time on the Ravens’ coaching staff from 2017 to 2020 serving as a defensive analyst in the years following his premature retirement due to injury.

He joined the Jacksonville Jaguars this season as the team’s outside linebackers coach under fellow former Ravens assistant Joe Cullen. With a new coaching staff coming to Jacksonville, Orr is looking for new opportunities.

Bringing a fan favorite like Orr back would certainly help ease the pain of losing a highly-touted assistant like Wilkins.

The Ravens now have vacancies at tight ends, inside linebackers, and outside linebackers coach after former tight ends coach Bobby Engram left to become the new defensive coordinator at Wisconsin.

Changes are being made to the Ravens’ coaching staff, although they might not be the changes most fans were hoping for or expecting.
