Ravens have extra reason to root for Rams in Super Bowl LVI
By Kristen Wong
The Baltimore Ravens would loathe seeing their division rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals, win the Super Bowl. They’re also pulling for a certain Rams player this Sunday.
Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle played his last season of football as a Raven in 2018 — or so he thought.
Secondary injuries caused the Rams to convince Weddle to come out of retirement and sign with Los Angeles in January, just five days before the Rams’ first playoff game.
Weddle has spent 13 years in the NFL, playing in Baltimore from 2016 to 2018 and earning Pro Bowl honors in every one of those seasons.
Now, the 37-year-old has the chance to win that long unattainable championship, and he’ll have the Ravens flock cheering him on along the way.
In three seasons in Baltimore, Weddle recorded 220 tackles, six quarterback hits, three sacks, and 10 interceptions. He gave his all to the Ravens and left on extremely good terms, and Ravens team officials have since reached out to him wishing him success on the national stage.
Baltimore Ravens want Rams’ Eric Weddle to succeed in Super Bowl LVI
General manager Eric DeCosta told reporters:
"“Eric is a pro’s pro. [He’s] really smart, does everything the right way, and I couldn’t be happier for him and proud of him. … I’m very excited. I love Eric. I can probably put him on one hand, as far as players that I’ve come to admire and appreciate.”"
Weddle’s tenure in Baltimore left him with nothing but good memories, and Weddle took some time before the Super Bowl to reflect on the Ravens organization.
"“Baltimore is a very special place, from the owner all the way down to Eric and everyone in the organization. I have a special place in my heart for them.”"
As one of the members in the Rams’ defensive backfield, Weddle will be in charge of covering Bengals’ wideouts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, among others.
Both Chase and Higgins torched the Ravens’ secondary for 319 receiving yards combined in their last meeting, and Baltimore would love to see Weddle help shut down the Bengals’ passing game and maybe even pick off Joe Burrow.
The Ravens may be playing catch-up to the Bengals for the next couple of years, and they don’t want to see smiles on any Bengals players’ faces on Sunday.
