The Ravens made the somewhat surprising decision not to tender restricted free agent Chris Westry this week meaning that all 32 teams will now have a chance to sign him.

The team still hopes they could bring him back, they just weren’t prepared to do so at a projected cap hit of $2.5 million. Not with his injury history and uncertain roster status.

A former undrafted free agent, Westry was signed to a futures contract last January with the expectation that he would compete for a roster spot in the summer.

Westry impressed in training camp and had the size at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds to intrigue the Ravens coaching staff. He not only made the Week 1 roster, but he went on to play nearly 40 percent of snaps in the season opener against Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, Westry suffered a torn lateral meniscus in that game, halting his progress and keeping him sidelined for nearly two months. In total, Westry played just six games, starting two.

Again, the Ravens want to bring him back and are optimistic that they will, but they’re no longer the only team bidding. One team that could come calling is the Giants.

Martindale has experience with Westry and could look to bring the big-bodied cornerback to New York, especially with James Bradberry possibly on his way out the door.

It’s far from a given that Westry re-signs with the Ravens.
