The Baltimore Ravens and wide receivers: name a more frequently discussed offseason storyline over the last decade. You probably can’t.
The Ravens find themselves connected to offseason rumors regarding wide receivers every offseason, but this year was supposed to be the first time they were relatively set at the position.
Then the team traded Marquise Brown on draft day, didn’t draft a single wide receiver, and we found ourselves back in the same position we’re always in. More wide receiver rumors.
This time, however, the rumors are more favorable. Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed reported last week that the Ravens are seen as an “attractive landing spot for veteran wide receivers,” according to at least one source.
That seems to contradict other reports we’ve heard in the past about wide receivers not wanting to play in Greg Roman’s run-heavy offensive scheme. Perhaps the possibility of playing time is enough to overlook the far-from-ideal offensive system they’d be playing in.
The Ravens could sign a veteran wide receiver before Week 1
That quote comes from an article Kyed put together in which he insisted the Ravens could look to sign free-agent wide receiver Will Fuller this summer.
Given the lack of depth the Ravens have in their wide receiver room, it certainly would make sense for them to explore adding a veteran name to the fold.
Fuller is one intriguing possibility and his speed could help offset the loss of Brown, although he comes with obvious major medical red flags. Others such as Cole Beasley, T.Y. Hilton, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., and Emmanuel Sanders remain available.
Right now, the Ravens are set to enter the 2022 season with a starting trio of Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, and James Proche at wide receiver. That’s not exactly the most proven trio of wideouts.
The Ravens do have an extremely deep tight end room led by superstar Mark Andrews, but they could certainly use some more talent at wide receiver.
If veterans are eyeing the Ravens as a favorable landing spot, the team should absolutely explore the free-agent market a little more.
Free-agent wide receivers apparently want to join the Ravens, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to find out that feeling is mutual.
