The Baltimore Ravens are hurting for outside linebacker depth at the moment, although it’s not due to a lack of trying to bolster the position.

The team signed a pair of veterans over the last few months in Vince Biegel and Trent Harris, only to have both go down with season-ending injuries shortly after joining the team. In Harris’ case, it was just three days later.

With Tyus Bowser and David Ojabo also rehabbing from torn Achilles, it’s clear that the Ravens could use some more help at the position. And it seems as though that help may be on the way.

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec reported on Thursday that the Ravens seemed likely to add another outside linebacker before the start of the regular season.

"“Unless team officials are extremely confident that Bowser will be ready for Week 1, and it’s hard to imagine they are given he hasn’t been on the practice field since January, they figure to make a move here over the next week.”"

Expect the Ravens to make an external addition at outside linebacker

Assuming Bowser is forced to miss the start of the season, which seems likely at this stage, the Ravens will be left with a healthy outside linebacker corps led by Odafe Oweh and Justin Houston.

Behind them, the team’s lack of depth becomes painfully apparent. Veteran Steven Means and second-year pro Daelin Hayes are competing for roster spots with undrafted rookies Jeremiah Moon and Chuck Wiley.

Means seems like a good bet to make the team and he has flashed at points, but it’s hard to count on Hayes or the others making any sort of an impact. Not to mention, Houston is 33 years old and will likely need his snaps to be limited.

The Ravens need help at the position, and whether that comes via a free-agent signing or waiver claim, it does seem likely to happen.

The team showed interest in former Pro Bowler Jason Pierre-Paul earlier in the offseason before re-signing Houston. Perhaps he’s a feasible target. If not, they should have the opportunity to add another pass rusher via the waiver wire next week.

Bottom line, the Ravens need to add another outside linebacker before the season starts. Accordingt to Zrebiec, it sure seems as though they’re expected to.
