The Baltimore Ravens' first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles was a massive success, as they dominantly won 24-7. Jesse Minter's new-look defense was sharp, and likewise, the offense was firing on all cylinders.
This showing helped solidify some players' spots on the final 53-man roster. It also showcased some of the Ravens' players who are in danger of being cut.
Baltimore Ravens players who locked up a roster spot
Keyon Martin, cornerback
Keyon Martin was a clear standout in the Ravens' first preseason game. He recorded two tackles for loss and a sack as a cornerback. Martin helped set the tone for the Ravens' defense with his energy. In addition to making some big plays, Martin provided some quality coverage.
For a Ravens team that needs some extra cornerback depth, Martin's energy and versatility should have his spot on the team set in stone. Not only will Martin earn a roster spot, but he could have a meaningful role in Jesse Minter's new-look defense.
Gerad Lichtenhan, tackle
Gerad Lichtenhan entered the preseason game as somewhat of an unknown after spending last season on the practice squad. The 24-year-old remarkably played every snap. That's a clear vote of confidence from the coaching staff, and he held up well in pass protection.
At 6-foot-8, he is an absolute giant, and thankfully (unlike some former Ravens), he takes full advantage of his size and is difficult to move. The Ravens bolstered their interior line this offseason. However, they could use a reliable backup tackle; after one preseason game, it feels likely that Lichtenhan will earn this spot.
Jovaughn Gwyn, center
After the Ravens signed Ethan Pocic, it was fair to wonder if Jovaughn Gwyn's tenure with the Ravens would be short-lived. At the very least, it felt like he was a bubble player. Nonetheless, Gwyn excelled in his first preseason showing. He played some of the most snaps among offensive players and arguably looked like the Ravens' best center bar none.
Gwyn showcased his physicality and sturdy pass protection. As Pocic continues to return to form after his Achilles injury, keeping three centers around could be logical, and without a doubt, Gwyn has made a compelling case to keep his spot.
Baltimore Ravens players who are in danger of being cut
Tyler Loop, kicker
The Ravens have been adamant about their belief in Tyler Loop so far. Regardless, he famously ended the Ravens' season with a missed kick, and he is just 1-for-4 on kicks above 50 yards. Unfortunately, the first preseason game only added to the concerns about Loop, as he missed a 49-yard field goal.
If Loop's struggles continue, the Ravens might have to bring in some competition for him. At some point, you need to see results, especially from deep range. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, excellence is the standard, and right now Loop isn't living up to this bar.
C.J. Okoye, defensive tackle
The Ravens' improved defensive line put C.J. Okoye in a tough spot. Last season, Okoye started on the practice squad before earning a spot on the active roster. Based on the first preseason game, though, it seems like Okoye could be the odd man out.
Okoye was on the field for just 25 percent of the team's snaps, which was among the lowest marks on the team. This low number of snaps with few starters playing spells doom for Okoye's chances of cracking the roster. He is competing with seventh-round pick Rayshaun Benny to earn a role with the team, and for the Ravens, it makes sense to favor upside.
Corey Bullock, interior lineman
With the Ravens' upgraded interior line, Corey Bullock was facing an uphill battle to earn a roster spot. He has some solid versatility, being able to play guard or center, which could be the reason he earns a spot on the final roster.
Regardless, playing just 14 snaps at the end of the game, it feels like Bullock is burried on the depth chart, especially with Gwyn and other linemen performing well. Bullock earned a roster spot with stellar play in last year's preseason. Now, though, it seems like the competition is too stiff and he'll be left behind.
