It's been a lot of fun for Baltimore Ravens fans to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers struggle in quarterback purgatory since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. From Kenny Pickett to Mitchell Trubisky to Russell Wilson, the Steelers have tried a variety of options at the quarterback position with none of those quarterbacks helping them get anything more than a playoff berth.
The latest quarterback linked to the Steelers this offseason is none other than Aaron Rodgers, who spent the past two seasons with the Jets. Rodgers was released by the Jets this offseason and appears to be deciding between the Giants, Steelers, and Vikings for where he'll head to next.
Well, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Rodgers' preferred destination is Minnesota. The Vikings have 2024 first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings and therefore it's taking them some time to decide if they want Rodgers or not. While the Vikings wait to make a decision on if they want Rodgers or not, Rodgers is going to wait it out, and that means the Steelers are also left waiting for a decision.
That same article notes that if the Vikings tell Rodgers they're not interested in bringing him in, instead of picking the Giants or Steelers, the former Packers and Jets quarterback could simply opt to retire and call it a career. This would be the cherry on top of what's already been a hilarious story for Ravens fans.
Aaron Rodgers could choose to retire over playing with the Steelers
The Steelers appear to be all-in on Rodgers at this point. If they've put all of their eggs in the Rodgers basket and he then decides he doesn't want to play, the Steelers could have to settle on re-signing Russell Wilson, bringing in someone like Jameis Winston, or spending a draft pick on Jaxson Dart or another quarterback.
No matter how you swing it, the Steelers look like they'll continue to be in quarterback purgatory. Rodgers wouldn't be the long-term answer there even if he did pick Pittsburgh and if he doesn't, they're going to be up a creek without a paddle at the most important position in the NFL. That's music to Ravens fans' ears.
