An NFL defender’s recent comments on Lamar Jackson will leave Ravens fans fed up

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is arguably the best player in the NFL, but that doesn’t stop people from making foolish statements about him.

It’s the NFL offseason, which means it’s time for Baltimore Ravens fans to hear silly things about Lamar Jackson. Every offseason, without fail, there are always a few people who get on a microphone and say something about the star quarterback that’s just simply not true. Jackson and Ravens fans just have to deal with it, before the quarterback ultimately returns to the field and reminds everyone he’s arguably the best player in the league.

The person currently carrying out this annual tradition of foolishness is veteran defender Charles Omenihu. The defensive end recently appeared on the Speakeasy talk show, and made the bold claim that the NFL has figured Lamar Jackson out. The point was made in a conversation comparing Jackson to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, and Omenihu said, “With Lamar, honestly, if you bring a five-man rush on him and collapse that pocket… he might make a play that isn’t going to be the best play for the Ravens,” arguing that it’s not the same with Allen.

Charles Omenihu says the NFL has figured out Lamar Jackson

Omenihu is preparing for his eighth NFL season after recently signing with the Washington Commanders, and he spent the last three years with the Kansas City Chiefs. That means he’s seen Jackson and Allen in recent years. You’d think that means fans can defer to his experience, but his words show that him being on the field isn’t enough to prevent him from being wrong.

Take the comparison to Josh Allen out of the conversation; the notion that the NFL has figured out Jackson, and can stop him by rushing five, is simply ahistorical. A player doesn’t routinely dominate the NFL like Jackson does if he’s figured out. Additionally, Jackson has thrived against pressure, making teams pay with his arm and his legs. In other words, Omenihu‘s statements are unfounded.

The defender went on to say that if you close all the rush lanes and cover the pass catchers, you can get the job done against Jackson. Well, yeah. That’s kind of how football works, and it applies to any quarterback. Even still, if there was any QB who could make the most of those circumstances, it’s Jackson and his unique rushing ability.

Either way, Charles Omenihu joins a long line of people who have said nonsensical things about Lamar Jackson, and just like everyone else, the quarterback will make his words look foolish when it’s time to play football again.
