A prominent theme of the Baltimore Ravens’ 2026 offseason has been reunions. It feels like with every turn, there’s a familiar face returning to Charm City.
From coaching hires like Jesse Minter and Anthony Weaver, to free-agent signings like John Simpson and Calais Campbell, there’s no shortage of familiarity despite the new era. That should help the team retain that ‘Play like a Raven’ mentality that has been key to their success. And there could be more coming.
Tony Jefferson was one of the names many hoped to reunite with this offseason, but he ultimately returned to the Los Angeles Chargers. It was only a one-year, $1.5 million contract, though, and with the way their safety battle is going, Jefferson is feeling the heat to not only win snaps but win a roster spot. If he slips, could Baltimore get a shot to bring Jefferson back?
Baltimore Ravens could luck into reunion shot with Jesse Minter’s former defender
Tony Jefferson remains very talented, even at 34 years old. He’s found the Fountain of Youth, going from retirement and Ravens scouting intern in 2023, to a reliable option on defense over the past two years with the Chargers.
Unfortunately, it sounds like age could play a factor in him getting forced down Los Angeles’ roster. Sure, he’s made some plays throughout the offseason, but so have the young guys. The Chargers have two budding safeties emerging in Genesis Smith and RJ Mickens, and according to Grant Bellchamber of Bolt Beat, they could pose a real threat to Jefferson.
"“Although Jefferson returned on a one-year, $1.5 million deal, the 34-year-old is the most vulnerable out of this [safety] group. He's still a strong tackler and competitor, but his abilities in coverage have waned as he's gotten older. Both Smith and Mickens will likely soon pass him by in this regard— if they haven't already.”"Grant Bellchamber
In a world where both Smith and Mickens pass Jefferson on the depth chart, that would certainly put the veteran on the roster bubble. He’s already behind the dynamic duo of Derwin James and Elijah Molden, but if you add the two young safeties into that mix, things could get really dicey for Jefferson. The Chargers might not be willing to keep five safeties, especially if they have a bigger need for depth elsewhere.
Now, would the Ravens want a fifth safety? They didn’t at the start of last year, but new head coach and former Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter had five on his team’s initial 53-man roster in 2025. If that’s something that carries over, Baltimore could look for a preseason cut to join the group of Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, Jaylinn Hawkins, and Keondre Jackson. Jefferson would be a very intriguing option in that case, given that he's played under Minter for five seasons.
If you throw in the fact that Hamilton and Hawkins possess supreme versatility, too, then there might be a real reason to add another safety. Yes, they did sign K’Von Wallace to be that guy, but he has struggled to get consistent reps in recent years. If he’s cut by the Chargers, Jefferson could reveal himself as the more trustworthy and familiar option.
