The Baltimore Ravens will likely be in the market for a new backup quarterback in the 2026 offseason. Cooper Rush, despite being signed to a two-year deal, proved when filling in for Lamar Jackson this season that he wasn't able to carry the offense. Tyler Huntley, who did play well when filling in for Jackson, is only signed through this year.
The Ravens could decide to bring Huntley back but if they decide to dip back into the free agent pool to find Jackson's backup for next year, who could they look into signing? One name floated around by Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports was Justin Fields, who is currently with the Jets. DeArdo listed a few different landing spots for Fields next year and Baltimore was on the list.
"Fields would give Baltimore another option behind Lamar Jackson in the event the two-time league MVP has another injury that would cause him to miss time. The Ravens' current backup is Tyler Huntley, a former Pro Bowler who led Baltimore to a season-saving win over the Bears back in Week 8.
Like Huntley and Jackson, Fields is exceptional with his feet, which should make him a natural fit inside Baltimore's offense. Like Huntley, one would expect that offensive coordinator Todd Monken wouldn't have to make too many changes to the game for Fields, whose 1,143 yards rushing during the 2022 season are second to only Jackson's 1,206 yards during the 2019 season in terms of single-season rushing yards by a quarterback."
While Ravens fans might cringe at seeing Fields' name attached to their team in any way, this pairing wouldn't be too crazy in all honesty. As DeArdo mentioned, Fields plays a similar style to that of Jackson and Huntley so adjusting the game plan for Fields if Jackson had to miss time wouldn't be too difficult.
Justin Fields makes a lot of sense as potential Lamar Jackson backup next season
Fields hasn't been good with the Jets this year and that's been proven by his latest benching. But his role in Baltimore would be much different than the one he's held in New York this year. Fields has proven in the past that he can be a solid backup and the Ravens are a well-coached team that could help mold him into a reliable starter should Jackson have to miss time.
The fact of the matter is that the Ravens will need to find someone reliable behind Jackson and Fields could be that guy. Jackson missed three games this season and in the past has missed a chunk of time during the year so having a backup that can play a similar style to his is important when searching for a backup. Fields checks that box for sure.
Maybe the Ravens end up simply sticking with Huntley, but considering they've felt comfortable moving on from him before, maybe the door is open to bring in Fields. With better coaching and a better team surrounding him, this move could make a lot of sense for Fields as well.
