A case can be made that no one had a better Week 1 of the preseason than Baltimore Ravens rookie LaJohntay Wester. The sixth-round pick out of Colorado immediately made his name known with an electric punt return touchdown during Baltimore’s preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts. With the Ravens searching for a starting returner, the belief is that Wester has already ended that search, securing himself a spot on the roster.

His returning ability got him in the door, and now everyone is excited to see how else he can contribute to the team. Notably, Wester also led the Ravens in receiving in the first preseason game, catching two passes for 41 yards. Fans who are familiar with his work as a wideout in college are excited about the possibility of him being added to Baltimore’s offense. Turns out, the Ravens are already thinking about that possibility as well.

On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Todd Monken told media members he sees Wester eventually developing into a major weapon for Baltimore’s offense.

Monken started by saying down the road, this year and in the future, Wester will have a larger role in the offense, but he also acknowledged how the rookie is immediately a nice insurance option for the team. The offensive coordinator explained that he’s another plug-and-play guy for the offense, who could show up big in the event that someone like Zay Flowers is out.

That certainly has to be music to Wester’s ears, who caught 326 passes for 3,634 yards and 31 touchdowns in 58 collegiate games. During his final college season, he caught passes from Shedeur Sanders, and established himself as a clutch receiver who always seemed to be open when the quarterback needed someone to go to.

Wester has already shown that his returning ability translates to the NFL. If his precise route running and ability to consistently create separation also translates, he’ll be a contributor on the Ravens offense sooner rather than later.
