Ravens' hopes of forming dream Lamar Jackson duo have never felt so impossible

The Baltimore Ravens have been extremely aggressive this offseason. From the coaching staff turnover by hiring Jesse Minter to roster reconstruction through the addition of edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, this is clearly a team tired of coming up short.

Unfortunately, it sounds like that aggression will subside for now. After acquiring key pieces like Hendrickson, offensive guard John Simpson, safety Jaylinn Hawkins, and others, they’re running low on cap space. Sure, restructuring quarterback Lamar Jackson’s contract freed up around $40 million, but the contracts they’ve handed out will significantly cut into that number. Depending on the structure of their free agent deals, they may not have the money to comfortably make another splash signing.

This likely means that the wide receiver help that fans have begged for this offseason will come in the 2026 NFL Draft. A physical wideout like Jauan Jennings would’ve made a ton of sense, but the hope of pairing him with Jackson is looking impossible.

Baltimore Ravens are likely out of the running for Jauan Jennings

The draft was probably the plan to improve the wide receiver room all along. Baltimore was reportedly looking to pair Hendrickson with Maxx Crosby along the edge before that trade fell through. However, with Crosby off the table, the dream was still alive for the front office to add a dynamic wide receiver opposite Zay Flowers. General manager Eric DeCosta seemingly shut all that down on Friday.

DeCosta mentioned during Trey Hendrickson’s introductory press conference that they are likely done making splash moves, highlighting a draft focus moving forward, while also staying on top of free agency.

“Are we going to go out and break the bank? Probably not,” DeCosta said. “I think we’ve broken the bank in some ways over the past week.”

That all but ends the Jennings dream. The 28-year-old would certainly be a “break the bank” type of move. According to Spotrac, he’s expected to sign a three-year contract worth nearly $68 million.

It’s tough because Jennings has really come on over the past two seasons. He’s been a trustworthy contested catch artist and is a red zone threat, hauling in 15 touchdowns from 2024 to 2025. At 6-foot-3, he would be the perfect player to complement Flowers in Declan Doyle’s offense, while also being that consistent X receiver that Lamar Jackson has really never had in his career. Jennings would add the dimension that the Ravens’ offense has been missing for far too long, but unfortunately, that won't be happening.

Of course, you can't completely rule it out; DeCosta isn't going to completely reveal his plans to the rest of the league. However, it's looking pretty far out of the realm of possibilities. They will invest in that spot come time for the 2026 NFL Draft.
